Adoption By Choice, Adoption Agency in Alberta

Becoming An Approved Applicant

In order to have a child placed in your care, the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act requires that you become an Approved Applicant through a licensed agency. There are three steps involved to become an approved applicant at ABC:

1. You must register with Adoption By Choice
2. You must attend an 11 hour pre-placement workshop.
3. You must have a home assessment report completed by a social worker at  ABC.

The number of Approved Applicants on our wait list is generally between 55 and 65.  The large majority of children placed by ABC are infants; however, we also place older children and siblings as well.

As a rough guide, families are waiting approximately 6 - 30 months after moving on to the active list for a placement to occur.  But the more flexible you are about the age and racial heritage of the child, and the kind of adoption plan you want to make, the more likely it is that it will happen sooner for you.  So much depends on the birth parents we are working with; the kind of adoption plan they want to build and how that fits with your plans.
