Pathways to Permanency Program

Since 2008, Adoption By Choice has had a contract with Child and Family Services Authority (CFSA) in the Calgary region to assist in the facilitation of adoption for children in the care of the province who are being adopted by their kinship family or by their foster families.

The Pathways to Permanency Program (formally known as the Kinship Adoption Program/KAP), supports kinship and foster families to take the necessary steps towards permanency with the ultimate goal of moving children to a permanent/legal adoption.

The Pathways to Permanency progam consists of a Program Supervisor,  Adoption Facilitators and Clerical Staff.  The Adoption Facilitator’s caseloads remain smaller to ensure families receive extra attention and support to assist in the navigation of the adoption system; thus reducing barriers to permanency. The Pathways to Permanency team collaborates primarily with the Child and Family Services  Permancy Planning Worker (PPW) who remains the child’s guardian until the adoption is granted. The Adoption Facilitator collects all documentation required for the completion of the adoption process. Since 2008, we have prepared signed off an average of 26 finalization packages per year. We also provide ongoing support, referrals and advocacy for families throughout their journey towards permanency.

The Pathways to Permanency program also offers a monthly support group for kinship families.  This voluntary group allows adoptive parents to meet other adults in similar situations, informs and educates on topics relevant to adoption issues and develops skills for problem solving in a supportive, non-judgmental atmosphere.
